Once you start studying with a course, you will tend to easily forget the other aspects of learning French. The French course provides you with input, but you also need output to learn French. In order to get the output you need, you can spend the first half of your time using your course and the second doing something else. For example, you could start by doing a lesson and then write in French or talk to someone in French. If you are not ready for that, you could also read something or watch a video in French, with or without subtitles, depending on your level.

In addition to a French course, you will also need to choose a grammar book. You don’t have to do it immediately, because your course probably includes some basic grammar explanations. This is the case with Assimil and Babbel. These explanations should be enough to get started. However, if this is not enough, Google is often your best friend. I find that googling a problem often gives you all the answers you need. You can also check www.french.about.com.
